2011 Fraud Prevention Conference
Preventing Fraud in a Digital Age
March is Fraud Prevention Month in Canada. The Canadian Bankers Association and a group of government and law enforcement agencies, associations, and businesses involved in Canada’s Fraud Prevention Forum held an interactive, information-packed, two-day international event.
Preventing Fraud in a Digital Age was the focus of the fraud prevention conference, held March 7 and 8, 2011 in Ottawa. Conference delegates learned about the current state of fraud, investigated the most at-risk audiences, shared best practices on recognizing and preventing fraud, and – ultimately – provided recommendations that partners in fraud prevention and education can implement.
The conference organizing committee included:
- Bank of Canada
- Canadian Bankers Association
- Canadian Chamber of Commerce
- Canadian Council of Better Business Bureaus
- Competition Bureau
- Consumers Council of Canada
- Direct Sellers Association of Canada
- Ontario Provincial Police
- RCMP
The conference agenda reflects the quality of speakers and presenters that lent their expertise to the event, including Inspector Kerry Petryshyn of the RCMP, representatives from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and the Competition Bureau.

The Fraud Prevention Forum
Banks take great efforts to protect their customers from fraud. There are also many simple but important steps that consumers can take to safeguard themselves.
The Canadian Bankers Association and many banks are members of the Fraud Prevention Forum, a concerned group of private sector firms, consumer and volunteer groups, government agencies and law enforcement organizations that are committed to fighting fraud aimed at consumers and businesses. Through its partners, the forum, which is chaired by the Competition Bureau, works to prevent Canadians from becoming victims of fraud by educating them on how to recognize it, report it and stop it.
